Why is Everest Base Camp Budget Trek Different Than Regular EBC Trek Package?

The cost of the Everest Base Camp Budget Trek differs from the cost of the standard EBC trek package since this trek is aimed at people with limited budgets. It significantly differs in the time frame where Kathmandu does not have overnights, and everyone spends the night in relatively basic lodges en route.

One of the reasons why this trekking is popular is because it is an economical way of viewing the Himalayan mountains. Second, about saving on costs, the package does not include Kathmandu stops, and they begin their trek from Lukla Airport, where they meet their guide. There is also no porter included in the trip cost, which means the price will even be lower for those willing to carry their personal belongings during the trek. Nevertheless, these changes do not water down the budget trek experience to the Khumbu region.

Still, the trekkers see the natural scenery, such as the Rhododendron and Pine trees, bamboo and steel bridges, beautiful waterfalls, etc. From there, one can go through the beautiful Sherpa villages to get information about the Sherpa people. Filled with visually interesting terraced fields, clear water streams, and great gorges, the activity adds the adventure factor to it; for the budget-savvy tourists, there is nothing to complain about in the area. So, having received this well-thought-out package, one can take the incredible Everest Base Camp trek despite the lack of money, so this invaluable opportunity is given to everyone who is interested in the field of adventure tourism.

Trip PlanExpand all

Your journey begins with an early morning hotel pickup followed by a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla’s Tenzing Hillary Airport. During peak seasons this flight could be from Manthali. The scenic flight itself is an experience with great views of snow-capped peaks and remote mountain villages. Upon landing in Lukla, we start our trek to Phakding for 3-4 hours, covering a distance of 8.2km/5.1 miles while soaking up the fresh mountain air as well as the beautiful verdant landscape. We trek alongside the gushing river on the trail that passes through Choplung village along the Dudh Koshi River. The route offers a view of Kusum Kanguru mountain. We shall also pass Ghat village famed for its painted mani stones, colorful prayer flags, and monastery. Making our way down will lead us to Phakding, where you will spend your first night. This allows time for us to visit the Dudh Koshi river bank and the trip to Phakding Gompa.

After breakfast, we set off for an exciting and challenging day of almost 800 meters ascent to Namche Bazaar. You will cross many suspension bridges and walk past many waterfalls, taking a riverside walk that refreshes trekkers. One of the highlights is your first view of Mt. Everest from Top Danda, just before you reach Namche. Walking amidst a pine forest and on the left bank of Dudh Koshi river valley, after you cross a suspension bridge, a continuous uphill awaits, which offers great views of Thamserku. After Monjo where trekkers’ permits are checked at the office, we proceed through Sagarmatha National Park and then to Jorsale. From here it’s another two-hour tough climb to get into Namche, so pace yourself slowly, steadily, and hydrate. The last steep climb offers great viewpoints where a more steep path awaits but also offers excellent panoramas. On ascending you will finally arrive in Namche Bazar.

This is an important day to allow the trekkers to acclimatize to the higher altitude while visiting the bustling Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar. You can too take a walk with our guide to the local army camp, which offers stunning views of Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Taboche, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Mt Everest. The Khumbu Park Museum and Sir Edmund Hillary’s Sherpa Museum hold small yet informative displays of mountaineering history accompanied by cultural heritage. For trekkers wanting more, there is a climb up to Everest View Hotel for an even more spectacular mountain view. Namche comes alive on Saturday as people from low lands, including Tibetan traders, swamp these foothills for their weekly market and rub shoulders with each other at this market rich with all types of gifts and food items in nice bargains. This day will also prevent people from getting altitude sickness before climbing steeper trails in the coming days.

We start our day with a 9.8km (6.08 miles) trek to Phortse village at (3,950m/12,929ft), where many record-setting climbing sherpas used to live. It will take around 6-7 hours to reach the campsite through a small trail, less crowded than the normal path of Everest Base Camp. It provides you the satisfaction that you have an authentic experience of trekking in the Himalayas with Sherpa culture on your side, too. This place is also famous for its awesome view of Choyu Mountain (8,188m), which is one of the best viewpoints in the region, including other extraordinary views from this amazing village. Comparatively tough, but with those beautiful natural beauty surroundings blended with endless sherpa heritage walking experiences, it would be worth remembering part of your life journey facts that will help build up your memories in the record books.

This less-trodden trail provides thrilling views of the Mt. Everest region. Following breakfast, we leave through Pangboche village and appreciate the magnificent views of Thamserku, Kangtega, and Ama Dablam en route. We will also visit one of the oldest monasteries in Khumbu, located in upper Pangboche, providing us with more cultural insights and peace for a moment before a three hour hike leads us to Dingboche. The reward of fewer trekkers and a combination of natural beauty, cultural discovery, and good acclimatization await you on today's journey to the forthcoming higher altitude.

Today we are at 4,410m, another important acclimatization day to help your bodies deal with the hardships you’ll face at high-altitude trekking. Not sleeping well and losing appetite will be common at these altitudes, but you should be strong-headed and take them positively; otherwise, it can lead you to altitude sickness. Hydrating yourself adequately is another important thing you must do – start drinking 3-5 liters of water daily. We’ll again spend our afternoon hiking up to Nagarjun Hill (5,100m). From here too, we get brilliant views of mountains like Lhotse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Island Peak, Cholatse and Taboche. This strenuous climb will again help your body adapt amidst some real stunning scenery. It will take us almost a good 3-5 hours before returning back to bed for rest tonight; walking up for a shorter period as this helps your body and mind be fully prepared. Trekkers already started getting excited about their Everest Base Camp And Kala Patthar Trek as they seem nearer than ever now.

After breakfast, we set off on a challenging and thrilling trek from Dingboche to Lobuche. We walk for the first 2 to 3 hours to Dughla while enjoying a great view of Taboche Peak. We need to keep enough energy in us and drink plenty of water. Then, after having lunch, we head up, gently ascending until we reach the Tokla Pass, where you will have Panoramic views, including memorial stupas comprised of prayer flags for those who died like Babu Chiri Sherpa, Scott Fisher, etc. Then the trail climbs through steep hills just above Chukhung Valley horizontally up and down toward the lateral moraine. The final hour of climbing takes you to the top of the ridge, closer to Lobuche. You can see Island Peak, the entire valley covered by giant snow peaks.

We’ll start the day very early, have breakfast, and prepare for the journey to Everest Base Camp (5,364m) via Gorakshep. Our trek will start by walking over the moraine to Gorakshep. We’ll have some energetic snacks in Gorak Shep and keep walking for a few hours more to reach Everest Base Camp. This overall trip will take us approximately 7-8 hrs.

This tour can be done in Spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November). Spring is full of expeditions like, attempting the Everest Summit. You might meet a few climbers in EBC who are preparing for their summit attempts. The trail from Lobuche to EBC consists of stones that facilitate the climber’s walk. It’s rocky lands with ups & downs until you arrive at the Base Camp, where thousands of prayer flags welcome you with close-up views of Mount Everest but not completely visible because of an up-close view of Nuptse blocking its view from there. Once you have completed your greetings photographs, we’ll return in the same way, i.e., back down to Gorak Shep for overnight.

After breakfast in Gorak Shep, there is a steep climb of one to two hours to Kala Patthar (5,545 m), which offers an excellent view of Changtse and the north face of Lhotse. The trek's highest point, Kala Patthar, provides a fantastic view of Mt. Everest, especially in the mornings. Then, after the stiff and long descent back to Gorak Shep for lunch, the path will be relatively easier, passing through panorama views in Pheriche plus scenic villages around chortens and memorial stupas. A lowland walk completely contrasts what you have experienced in the previous day’s hike. Snow-capped peaks while walking below are quite clear to Pheriche village. This beautiful village is enclosed with stunning snow capped mountains, green trees, and monasteries. Stay overnight at one of many lovely lodges available at Pheriche.

The downhill walk is much easier than the ascent. We take a different route down Namche to Tengboche, which gives us a different view of the landscape around us. The only break on today’s journey will be in Pangboche, where we stop for lunch and photos. After we crossed over the Dudh Koshi River with a suspension bridge, our trail went through some rhododendron forests before passing Phunki Thenge and climbing up to Kyanjuma, where everything flattened out until we descended into Namche again. The varied terrain of this day shows us that the Sagarmatha National Park encompasses quite a few ecosystems and great views. Even when it’s a lot easier, going downhill all day is long. We finally reach Namche Bazaar after 7-8 hr of trekking, where you stay overnight in a lodge. We will now reach lower altitudes every day leaving the highest points behind and gradually going back into more populated areas in the Khumbu.

The final day of our Himalayan adventure feels easier as all we do is walk downhill. This downhill trek follows the Dudh Koshi River back to Lukla, crossing some suspension bridges and winding through the same sort of pine and rhododendron forests seen earlier on the way up. We go by several Sherpa villages, past many Mani walls, and soon see Lukla in front of us again ahead. The day is bittersweet, with sadness at leaving the mountains mixed with excitement about returning home. We, too, celebrate your accomplishment on the final night over dinner in Lukla and head off to bed for well-earned sleep in the guesthouse, knowing that you’ll be leaving early the next morning.

This last day of the Budget Everest Base Camp Trekking starts with an early breakfast at Lukla before taking a 30-minute scenic flight back to Kathmandu (1,400m/4,593ft). Upon your arrival at Kathmandu domestic airport, you will be met and assisted by our office representative. We bid you farewell with a farewell dinner with the Team at a lovely fine restaurant in the evening.

However, no prior trekking experience is required as long as an individual is engaged in activities such as walking, jogging, hiking and has good strength. No doubt that 12 Days Budget Trek suits best for those people who have enough spirit to accomplish it, willingness and determination to get themselves ready. This ensures they can enjoy their adventure without interruption despite their age and fitness.

Altitude sickness is the only concern because we trek at higher elevations. The itinerary includes acclimatization days which are crucial for every trekker as we climb higher. We have to cater a flexible program especially for those who are doing high altitude treks for the first time. Incase of AMS which most likely occurs but can be prevented if right precautions are taken and the proper process is done.T he challenges of the trek such as endurance and altitude but nothing is impossible with right mind setting and preparations.

Is There Chances of Getting Altitude Sickness on Budget Everest Base Camp Trek

12 Days Everest Base Camp Budget Trek has 2 acclimatization days, which is similar to the 14-day trek. It will help to prevent altitude sickness that occurs because of having less time for our body to adapt to high altitude. We have designed the trek itinerary in order not to gain more than 500 meters of altitude a day as per the recommended safety guidelines.

While our trek guides carefully watch everyone’s health condition, trekkers must always be cautious and report if they start feeling anything unusual like headache, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, or vomiting. To minimize altitude sickness risk, trekkers should:

  • Keep well hydrated
  • Maintain a balanced diet.
  • Avoid alcohol, and smoking
  • Go up very slowly

The trek’s elevation profile, starting at 2,860 meters in Lukla and reaching at 5,644 meters over the span of 12 days, gives a real sense of how much altitude we climb to and deal with. The two acclimatization days provide the chance for the body to adjust itself to less oxygen.

While on this trek everyone will get the necessary information regarding altitude sickness by your guides. Still it is possible that some still could get it. Our leaders are prepared in first aid care along with various conditions including those deriving from lack of oxygen. If necessary they are ready to descend people back down or take other measures. Proper preparation, following guide instructions and listening to one's body are important factors in handling the altitude challenges of this trek.

Best Time for Everest Base Camp Trek 12 Days

There are no such restrictions or limitations for Everest Base Camp Trek best time. But nevertheless, trekking in each month has different circumstances and exciting feelings also. January to February months are coldest of all whereas snowfall is predictable with cold. Still, adventurers who enjoy trekking in bitterly cold winters can find winter as one of the best times. Further most importantly one should have plans, arrangements, and the status of weather so far to make your trip a successful and happiest journey on Everest Base Camp Trek.

Spring and Autumn: The Ideal Seasons

Spring (March to April) and autumn (October to November) are considered as the best times to trek to Everest Base Camp. During these months the weather is stable with clear sky, mild temperature without being too hot or too cold that provide beautiful views of mountains and green vegetation. The clear sky gives a chance for proper mountain viewing while still walking at comfort. Kathmandu-Lukla flights are more likely to fly during these times, and quite importantly the Himalayan region looks most beautiful providing unforgettable experiences.

Summer and Monsoon: The Challenging Months

It’s also generally not advised to go on a trek between May and September, during summer and monsoons. There’ll be lots of rain which makes trails muddy and slippery, Lukla flights might get delayed so be ready for your plans to be derailed by a couple days.

Winter Trekking: A Unique Experience

Early December can offer a unique winter trekking experience in the Everest region. The snowfall creates a picturesque landscape, and clear skies provide stunning mountain vistas. However, winter treks require careful planning and timing. As the season progresses, temperatures drop dramatically, and heavy snowfall can make trails challenging. While daytime can be pleasant, nights are extremely cold, demanding proper preparation and equipment.

Meals are provided at the teahouses you stay in, where you can expect a menu of simple, hearty food such as dal bhat (lentils and rice), noodles, soups and some Western options. As you ascend, food will become more basic with higher prices.

Yes, getting travel insurance is required to join this trek. Be sure your insurance covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation (including helicopter rescue) up to 6500 m in elevation.

Porters typically aren't included in budget packages to keep costs down. You'll need to carry your own backpack. Pack light and bring only the bare essentials.

There are a couple of ATMs in Namche Bazaar, but they're not always reliable. It's best to bring enough cash from Kathmandu for the entire trek. Prices also go up as you ascend, so budget accordingly.
