Itinerary
Trip PlanExpand all

On the first day of Everest Base Camp Trek, we will take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Located at the altitude of 2,860 meters above sea level, Lukla Airport offers a scenic views of Mt. Everest and Ama Dablam. It takes around 45 minutes of flight from Kathmandu to reach Lukla.

From Lukla, we will start our hike towards Phakding at 2610 meters above sea level and it takes around 3 to 4 hours to reach there. We will traverse Buddhist settlements of Chheplung and Nurning before making it to Phakding, where we will stay at a tea house.

Today, we will make it to Namche Bazaar, the Gateway to Mount Everest, which is located at 3430 meters above sea level. It is a 5 to 6 hours of hike from Phakding that takes us through the rugged landscapes demanding physical and technical preparations.

During the trek, we will traverse settlements such as Bengkar and Monjo from where the stunning views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse can be seen. After that, we will pass across Jorsalle and Larja Dobhan before reaching Namche Bazaar.

Tonight, we will stay at a guest house in Namche Bazaar, enjoying diverse culture and tradition.

Since Namche Bazaar is situated at an altitude of 3430 meters above sea level, every trekker here after arriving from the strenuous long trek from Lukla needs to acclimatize. Rest and adaptation helps in retaining energy and the ability to adapt above high altitudes.

Some of the helpful considerations include gradual ascend, stay hydrated, eat healthily, avoid beginning, knowing symptoms of altitude sickness, wearing warm clothes, and using an oxygen monitor. These practices ensure that trekkers have good health conditions in the Himalayas and are safe during the trekking.

Tengboche, a peaceful Buddhist village 3860 meters, is the next destination during the trek to Everest Base Camp. Today, we will embark on a 5-6 hour trek on the Khumbu Region's trail through lush forests along the Bhote Koshi River.

We will proceed through the right side of Namche which leads us to Phunke Tenga village. As we hike uphill through the rugged trails, we come close to Tengboche village, which is home to Tengboche Monastery, established in 1916 Lama Gulu.

Overnight stay at a tea house.

Today we will embark on a 5 to 6-hour hike from Tengboche to Dingboche. On the way, we will traverse remote trails featuring some of the exciting natural wonders. We will begin our journey with breakfast in Tengboche, venturing through the stunning Imja Valley.

Along the route, we will come across the ancient Deboche Monastery, a sacred Tibetan Buddhist site. From there, we will continue our hike through the serene landscapes and after an hour and a half, finally reach Dingboche.

At 4360 meters above sea level, Dingboche stands as a high altitude destination that poses significant risks related to altitude. High altitude locations such as Dingboche poses thin air and low oxygen, requiring trekkers to acclimatize.

Altitude-related illnesses like AMS, HAPE, and HACE are common at such height. So, enough rest, hydration, and nutrition are crucial. Tonight, we will be staying at a tea house, prioritizing rest and sleep.

The seventh day of the Everest Base Camp Trek sets our journey from Dingboche to Dughla at 4620 meters above sea level. Today’s trek will be around 5 hours long which takes us through the rugged path of the Khumbu region.

Remember, this trek will be physically demanding, so do not forget to pack your essentials such as sturdy hiking boots and trekking poles for your comfort.

On the way, we will traverse Dusa Village from where the uphill trail takes us to Dughla, today’s destination. Upon reaching Dughla, we will stay at a tea house.

As we depart from Dughla, we'll make our way to Thokla Pass, one of Nepal's high-altitude passes at 4830 meters above sea level. It's windy there, so wearing windproof, warm clothing, and preparing for the climate is advisable.

It takes approximately one and a half hours from Thokla Pass to reach Lobuche, where we will stay overnight at a tea house.

On the ninth day of the Everest Base Camp Trek, we'll reach Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters above sea level after a 7 to 8-hour hike. Starting from Lobuche, we'll traverse the stunning Khumbu Glacier, passing Lobuche Pass at 5110 meters, before arriving at Gorak Shep, the final Sherpa settlement in the Everest Region.

The journey offers breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, Island Peak, and Nuptse. Additionally, the sunrise and sunset vistas are perfect for photography enthusiasts. After exploring Everest Base Camp, we'll return to Gorak Shep for an overnight stay at a tea house.

On today's trek, we will be focusing on reaching the height of 5644 meters above sea level at Kala Patthar. Being the highest webcam in the world, Kala Patthar boasts the unparalleled views of the Mahalangur Mountain Range, including Mount Everest. Similarly, the sunrise and sunset vistas here are awe-inspiring.

We will start our journey early for Kalapatthar to catch the sunrise. After sightseeing activities on the spot, we will then retrace our way to Pheriche. We will follow the same trail that we used to reach Kala Patthar before and make a descent through Thokla Pass and Dughla before reaching Pheriche.

On the eleventh day, we will retrace our journey from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar. We will start our hike early in the morning after a warm breakfast and then embark on a 6 to 7 hours long journey.

We will traverse the same route passing through Tengboche before making it to Namche Bazaar. Namche is a bustling Himalayan Town with diverse culture and Sherpa tradition. We can find a variety of food, people from around the world who come to climb Everest and nearby peaks, or treks and the diverse lifestyle they come with in Namche Bazaar.

Today, we will journey back to Lukla from Namche Bazaar traversing Sherpa settlements, such as Phakding, Nurning, and Chheplung Village. The path is rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are advised for safety.

From Namche Bazaar, it takes around 6 to 7 hours to reach Lukla. Upon reaching there, we will spend the night at a tea house or guest house resting and enjoying Nepali dishes.

Today, we'll return to Kathmandu from Lukla via a 45-minute flight. Upon landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, officials from the Himalayan Partner Treks and Expeditions will accompany you to your respective hotels.

Following this, you'll have a full day of leisure to explore various destinations in the Kathmandu Valley and indulge in shopping activities.

Essential Information

Best Time To Do This Trek

The best time to trek to the Everest Base Camp depends on many aspects such as weather, trail condition and personal preferences. Situated in the Khumbu Region in Nepal, Everest Base Camp Trek requires a careful choice of trekking time for an enjoyable and thrilling experience.

Spring and Autumn are the best seasons for trekking in Nepal because of the best of conditions. These two seasons offer the best weather conditions with excellent trail conditions, which is why most people prefer to trek during these times of the year. Here are the full details:

Spring

In Spring, the Khumbu Region is rich with bright flower-filled meadows and lush greenery all over. The trail is full of beautiful views of bloomed rhododendrons and forests that change green leaves, allowing trekkers to have the cinematic views. Remember, if you are photography and videography geek, this might be the best opportunity for you.

Spring also has relatively pleasant weather and milder temperatures with the average temperature in Khumbu Region being between -6 to 18 degrees Celsius. The season provides drier conditions with a minimal rainfall and snowfall, enabling the safe navigation of the dry and stable path.

Second, Spring is a clear sky season for which the visibility is the best and therefore views are remarkable with snow-covered peaks, green hills, valleys, and rivers along the trail.

Autumn

Another season that is greatly recommended for the journey to Everest Base Camp is autumn. It coincides with the festival period in Nepal like Dashain and Tihar, providing diverse cultural services. The weather is spring-like with clear skies and coolness, ranging from 12 to 15°C which is perfect for trekking.

On the other hand, late autumn may be as low as 0°C. Rain and snow falls are limited, so travelers move safely through the remote pathways of Khumbu region. Autumn has lesser crowds as compared to the spring and this brings about easy accommodation and transport. However, hikers have to get ready for the chilling cold and difficulties of altitude. It is essential to check the weather forecasts and trail conditions, traveling with a respected agency or guide provides added safety and support.

EBC Trek During Off Season

When you trek to Everest Base Camp in the off-seasons like monsoon and winter, you may require assistance to see some of the most famous sights of the region. When the monsoon arrives, the region is more likely to be hit by natural disasters like landslides if you trek at that time. It is forecasted to rain, and the trails can be slick and muddy under such conditions.

In the same way, a heavy snowfall and the occurrence of avalanches during winter might cause some problems with your access to that part of the country. In spite of such inconveniences, off-season trekking is regarded as an affordable option and the Khumbu region has comparatively less rush.

Accommodations on Everest Base Camp Trek

The 12 days Everest Base Camp trek package includes accommodation in local tea houses throughout the trek. The tea houses offer basic but comfortable lodging with mattresses, pillows, blankets and sometimes attached bathrooms. Most tea houses have common bathrooms. The rooms will be twin share, with 2 single beds, though single supplement rooms can be arranged at extra cost. The tea houses allow you to really experience the local culture by staying alongside villagers, guides and fellow trekkers. All meals are included during the trek.

If you would like to upgrade to a higher standard of accommodation, with more amenities and privacy, we can arrange lodges along the way according to your preferences and budget. Please let us know if you would like to upgrade at any point and we will be happy to check availability and pricing to make your trek more comfortable.

Meals on Everest Base Camp Trek

The Everest Base Camp trek package includes three delicious, fresh-cooked meals per day - breakfast, lunch and dinner. All meals are provided at the local tea houses and lodges along the route. The menu is primarily Nepali cuisine along with a variety of multi-cuisine options.

A typical breakfast spread consists of porridge, oatmeal, toast, eggs, pancakes or local items like Tibetan bread. Lunch includes dal bhat (lentil soup, rice, curried vegetables), noodles, momos, sandwiches etc. Hearty dinners consist of curries, pasta, pizza and more. At locations like Lukla and Namche Bazaar, you can also find global dishes like fish and chips, burgers and baked goods.

Boiled drinking water is provided free of cost to refill your reusable bottles. The friendly staff cooks up hot, tasty and hygienic meals to fuel your days of thrilling Himalayan trekking. With 3 meals per day included, you can focus on enjoying the stunning mountain landscapes rather than worrying about food.

Permits & Licenses

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

To trek through Sagarmatha National Park, tourists need a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, obtainable from the Nepalese Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or the park's entrance gate in Monjo. Carrying the permit during hiking is crucial for presenting it to officers in required areas, facilitating passage along the trekking route and conservation zones.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit, a special permit introduced in October 2018, replaces the TIMS card for this journey. Available at Monjo and Lukla Airport for around US$18 or NPR 2000, with a 10-day notice extendable for nine days upon payment of NPR 1000 or USD 9. To secure the permit, provide passport details, a photocopy, visa data, complete a form, and pay the fee.

Gaurishankar Conservation Area Entry Permit

This is the alternative permit that is required if trekkers opt to travel to Lukla via Jiri. The trail from Jiri traverses the area around the protected area of Gaurishankar Conservation Area, so trekkers must compulsorily get this permit. The cost of this permit is NPR. 2000 per person.

Guided Trek

Going for the Everest Base Camp Trek means that safety should be given utmost priority with the hiring of a guide being necessary. The trail itself poses risks given the terrain is rugged, remote, and uphill, and trekking on one’s own would be hazardous, more so for first-time visitors who might easily get lost in the wilderness. Therefore, hiring guides should be recommended from the beginning.

One of the most important reasons for hiring guides is their navigational skills. With the challenging trails and diverse routes that connect to different end points inside the Everest Region, seasoned guides guarantee that the trekkers are guided in the right direction, through visually stunning viewpoints and rich sceneries, safely.

The safety of the trekkers remains the primary concern for remote treks such as the Everest Base Camp where high altitudes and difficult terrains pose dangers such as altitude sickness and injuries. Professional guides with first aid knowledge are a safety net, able to provide immediate medical attention and make quick decisions in emergencies.

The cultural immersion is another point of interest in this trek because of its multiethnic groups and rich culture. The guides act as cultural links, helping travelers meet the locals, translating languages, and sharing information on the region’s heritage, thus making the trekking journey more interesting.

Local guides, familiar with the culture, customs, and history of the region, provide essential information about historical sites and cultural value, making the trek more meaningful.

Finally, information about the local weather conditions provided by the guides guarantees safety and convenience for the trekkers, which gives an opportunity to change the itinerary if necessary. Basically, guides are the essential partners that guarantee a secure, enriching, and responsible trekking journey in the Everest region.

Hiring guides is a compulsory part of not only Everest Base Camp Trek but any remote trekking in Nepal.

Everest Base Camp Trek Difficulty

Trek to the Everest Base Camp is quite challenging as it requires both the physical and mental strength. Trekking to Everest Base Camp is an arduous and treacherous multi-day journey from Lukla, which is itself no walk in the park, as it typically involves 5 to 6 hours of hiking. Trekkers may find the endurance needed for such long walks involving some degree of difficulty.

In addition to this, the elevation makes the challenge even more complicated, as base camp stands at 5,364 meters above sea level. Low levels of oxygen and the high pressure in high-altitude environments exacerbate the risk of altitude sickness, including HACE, HAPE, and AMS; these conditions can be extremely dangerous to one’s health.

In addition, the volatility of the Himalayan weather makes things worse. Sudden changes of the weather are the main challenges in the trekking area; low temperatures, strong winds, and rainfall during monsoon or winter require serious preparation to prevent risks and maintain safety for everyone during a trek.

Challenges of This Trek

High Altitude: The Himalayan trek is all about reaching the heights that are more than 5000 meters and degrees above the sea level which results in dropping of oxygen levels and suffering from the altitude sickness symptoms, i.e., headaches and nausea. These risks can be lowered sufficiently with a proper acclimatization done, which is very relevant for a successful climb.

Physical Endurance: The journey demands a high level of stamina as the trekkers must walk for a long time. Besides various challenges, they have to overcome steep and wobbly slopes.

Weather Variability: Himalayan weather has the undesired reputation for its spectacular and sudden changes that can range from hail, rain, or very low or very high temperatures, especially in higher altitudes. Proper dress and equipment are a must when you are preparing for a kind of weather, which is always unpredictable.

Remote Environment: The trekking in the Everest region is going to be in a remote area where medical aid and emergency services are almost generally accessible.

Trail Conditions: The path to Everest base camp is not easy because the trail is rocky and uneven, and it is made worse by inclement weather. Trekkers face steep hills, treacherous downhill treks, river crossing, and slippery slopes that demand care and firm steps.

Preparations Required for The Trek

The Everest Base, Camp Trek preparation, demands a good deal of consideration and a high level of preparedness to deal with the landscapes and possible dangers that the trek might present. As has been indicated, there is a high level of difficulty here, and good preparation becomes an essential factor for the safety and readiness for emergencies.

Physical & Mental Conditioning:

The Everest Base Camp Trek is a difficult and tiring journey, and it requires you to be fit both mentally and physically. The whole journey takes two weeks, with 6 to 7 hours of walks every day in the Himalayan areas. Furthermore, climbing from the base camp can be difficult because participants have to go through the slippery and icy slopes at low temperatures and high altitudes, which requires them to have strong stamina and endurance.

Mental preparedness is about as critical, though, and trekkers need to know the risks and challenges the Everest Base Camp Trek brings. In order to accomplish the climb you must forecast the challenges of mountaineering and have a stiff minded attitude.

Training Before Trekking:

Trekking to the Everest Base Camp that is known as the most difficult trek in Everest Region of Nepal demands a certain level of experience to overcome it. The rocks, glaciers, and high altitude have risks, and trekkers go through rock climbing training to control the risks.

Choosing the Optimal Time

It is necessary to understand Nepal's seasonal weather patterns in order to determine the most appropriate time to start the EBC trek. Spring or autumn seasons come with pleasant weather, magnificent scenery, and lower costs, which make them great times of the year for the expedition. Nevertheless, weather such as monsoon and winter are associated with snowfall, rainfall, landslides, and avalanches, which appear more of a danger to trekkers' safety and navigation.

Safety Tips for Everest Base Camp Trek

Altitude Sickness: Be Aware and Prepared

The side effects of altitude sickness are severe and the risk increases above 5000 meters at Everest Base Camp. Look out for signs such as headaches, nausea, and weakness. In case of symptoms, come down immediately and get medical treatment.

Weather Awareness and Safety Measures

The weather in the Everest locality changes fast particularly during winter where there is heavy snow. Keep up with forecasts and be prepared to react to abrupt changes. Wear fleece jackets and windbreakers as required.

Preventing Theft and Scams

These are uncommon but thefts and scams may also happen. Stay alert by not carrying loads of cash, and keeping valuables safe. Be aware of current legislation in terms of permits and fees.

Food Safety and Hygiene

Ensure food safety during high altitude fencing. Only eat foods that are cooked properly, wash hands regularly, avoid raw foods, and drink only boiled or bottled water.
