Best Time To Do Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise Trek

Spring Season

The Spring Season, the period starting from March up to the middle of May is also a favorable time to take part in the Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise Trek. This season is moderately cool for trekking, making it a tourist favorite. The trails are accompanied by beautiful red, pink, and white rhododendrons flowers, painting the whole area. The flowers, alongside the green landscapes of hills and forests, offer a colorful contrast against some of the highest mountains in the world like Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

The weather of the spring is characterized by clear blue skies and thus hikers are guaranteed to be awarded vantage views of the Himalayas from Poon Hill, especially in the early morning. Bird watchers will also benefit from the high activity of birds and the occasional view of wildlife within the region. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise Trek is best to be undertaken in Spring when there is less precipitation and the environment is quite pleasant even for first-time hikers.

Autumn Season

The other favorable season is Autumn which goes from September to November and this is also one of the best times to go for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise Trek. The monsoon is followed by clear skies, especially late in the day, which can provide the finest views of the Himalayas. The dry cool climate ensures that trekking is well done with day temperatures being good while at night the temperature becomes perfect. This has the added advantage of making trails safer and more enjoyable for hiking as compared to the wet and muddy ones.

Autumn also includes the main cultural events in Nepal as the Dashain and Tihar, so the trekkers can also enjoy the cultural activities during the trekking. Autumn is also considered the best season to trek as it is characterized by clear skies, favorable climatic conditions, and a great opportunity to experience the culture of both India and Nepal before enjoying the sunrise on the top of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains from Poon Hill. The special allure of this season and the specific conditions that can be expected on trekking guarantee a marvelous adventure.

Off-Season Treks | Recommended Or Not?

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise trek in the Annapurna region also holds a different beauty during the off seasons despite the mass tourism in the high season. The monsoon season is from June to September, during which the place is a green paradise. Heavy rains make the forests, fields, and valleys green full of vegetation and flowers.

Even though it remains slippery, with many muddy trails, and many leeches and insects present. However, it is relatively wet with occasional cloudy conditions which hampers visibility and reduces the view of the great mountains; it is therefore not ideal for beginners or those who are unable to trek in wet conditions.

The winter months of December to February transform the Poon Hill region into a beautiful snowy destination of Ghorepani. The weather is also perfect during the winter months for the views are clear and free from dust haze and the mountains including the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, the trails, and most of the sceneries are powdered with snow. The less crowded trails offer a relatively serene hiking adventure; especially if one’s trek is scheduled to coincide with the local events, thus making the cultural encounter a bonus.

Unlike what some may think, winter treks are not a piece of cake. It gets freezing, particularly at higher elevations, so one must dress quite well and have an extra layer of clothing. The trails might be tough to pass through in the snow, and you might need to use extra apparatus on your feet. In some parts, there is even a high possibility of avalanches. The teahouses and lodges offer minimal services since some of them are closed off during the season. Unfortunately, this season is not for the novices in winter trekking or those who get easily affected by cold systems.

ACAP Permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Project)

The funds generated from this permit are used to support conservation initiatives, infrastructure improvements, and assistance to the locals.
