Itinerary
Trip PlanExpand all

On the first day of the Mardi Himal Trek, you will fly to Nepal from your home country. You should plan to arrive in Kathmandu in the morning or during the day to have enough time to organize everything for your trek. Our team at the airport will meet you and transfer you to your pre-arranged hotel in Kathmandu.

In the evening, you will be greeted by your local guide, and if there are any last-minute purchases to be made, you can do so as well. A briefing from our trek leader on the trail’s general outline and the particular trek’s dos and don’ts will follow. You will spend the evening with our team members for a welcome dinner organized in a local restaurant and then get ready to experience Thamel's colorful and lively streets.

The second day comes with a flight to Pokhara and then Kande to initiate the Mardi Himal Trek. After breakfast, we will transfer you to the Domestic airport to fly to Pokhara. There will be a breathtaking view of most snow-capped mountains. Finally, arrival in Pokhara will be partially driven in a private vehicle to Kande, our starting point for the trek.

From Kande, the path ascends, and we experience thorny vegetation and beautiful towns. You then move to ‘Pothana,’ located after ‘Australian Camp,’ which is stunning. Depending on the day’s weather, the towering Himalayan seems to come within your reach, with the Annapurna range of mountains being the climax of the sightseeing spree.

Now, we move from Pothana to Forest Camp on the third day, which should take 6 to 7 hours. From Pothana, the path leads up to Pitam Deurali and joins the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking from here. Along this route, some of which are shaded canopies, you find yourself in the middle of thick, isolated forests.

The path goes through oak trees, rhododendron trees, hemlock trees, and maple trees, and it provides quite an environment of nature that people can quickly feel or associate with. Sitting at the top of the trail, Forest Camp or Kokar offers breathtaking vistas after a tiring but satisfying trekking session.

Today, we will set on a 4 to 5-hour hike from Forest Camp to reach Badal Danda. Our journey starts after a warm breakfast and preparation at Forest Camp.

Despite the relatively small distance between Forest Camp and Badal Danda, you have to climb up steep slopes of juniper and rhododendron forests. During the trekking, the sights of Mt. Fishtail, Annapurna South, Mt. Hiunchuli, Mt. Gangapurna, & Mardi Himmel are the reward of the trek.

The fifth day comes with a 4 to 5-hour hike followed by acclimatization to adapt ourselves to the high altitude. We are already at 3600 meters above sea level, so the risk of altitude sickness is very high. That’s where acclimatization helps.

But before that, you must take a short but intensive trip to High Camp to enjoy the magnificent views of the glacier peaks of the western Himalayas. This day will be one of the most beautiful; they will see some of the highlands like Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Annapurna South, and Tare Kang.

After that, the trail goes further than trees, up the Mardi Himal ridge that offers spectacular views. The ascending route you follow covers most inclined terrains, mainly grassy slopes; slowly and steadily, you will arrive at High Camp. On the way, enjoy the view of the national bird of Nepal, Danphe, which adds little color to the tour.

Today is when your mission for the Mardi Himal Trek is complete, and you will reach the Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4500 meters above sea level. You will begin hiking from the Mardi Himal Base Camp early in the morning to witness the stunning sunrise. The movements take you up the ridge going to the base camp; the trail passes through a grassy way, and occasionally, there are steep areas.

On your way, you will likely meet dzokpo, a cross between the cow and yak, or the Danphe, the National bird of Nepal. You will also be able to observe sheep and goats in this region that are also used for cropping. At the end of the steep climb is the Mardi Himal Base Camp, one of the most beautiful places you will ever see, so all the steepness cannot be considered a drawback. We will return to Low Camp for the night tomorrow so it will be a long day with many hours spent on our expedition.

Now it's time to descend, and we will first reach Siding from the Low Camp. Instead of returning to Kokar from Low camp, you will complete the loop and head downwards to the beautiful village of Sidhing. People who have explored Mardi Himal Base Camp and walked through the defined route may find Sidhing a little less in terms of village sites but a lot more in terms of human interaction.

After breakfast at Sidhing, you will be driven to another beautiful place called Pokhara, where you will have your night accommodation. The Lakeside Market is the perfect place to explore, and in the evening, you can enjoy your preferred meal at a restaurant of your choice.

After a warm breakfast, you will join the tourist bus to Kathmandu. The ride takes approximately seven hours, but the beautiful scenery of the hills and other lands also make the drive an experience.

When you are on a journey, you can admire the gift of nature and even snap some lovely photos. You have some time for refreshment and orientation after you arrive in Kathmandu. At sunset, the company will organize a farewell dinner, where you can talk about your fantastic journey and exciting moments with other people.

Your amazing Mardi Himal Trek has been completed, and you are saying your last goodbyes in front of Pashupatinath Temple on the last day in Kathmandu. Expectation intermingled with little memories that have been cherished draws today as the day makes the travelers go back home. Fear not, for Easy will be with you to the airport, thus making sure that every part of your trip is according to the flight timetable. As we say, it’s indeed goodbye. The journey you have been on is still fresh, and it brings out some memories you will cherish for a lifetime.

However, if what you are about to see below interests you in a wide range of Nepal’s geographical and cultural beauties, stay longer. No matter whether you are planning to ascend to the calm and picturesque valleys of Pokhara, watch the wildlife of Chitwan National Park, or visit religious holy places in Lumbini, our extra-day tour options are limitless and provide a multitude of opportunities to give your adventurous journey a new turn and make more unforgettable experiences in this incredible country.

Essential Information

Best Time To Do The Mardi Himal Trek

Spring Season (March to May)

Trekking the Mardi Himal route is expected in the spring season, from March to May. Thus, as for the climate of this area, the precipitation increases and comes in the form of rain while the temperatures are moderate, making it suitable for trekking. The warm-between-season temperatures range between 10 C to 20 C in the lowlands, which is comparatively warm, while the night is relatively colder at the mid and highlands. The weather is relatively favorable; observing the Himalayan slopes minimizes the likelihood of cloudy skies.

The beautiful flowers are one of the most captivating features, depending on the intention of trekking in spring. From the hills and through the forests that line the trail, hundreds and thousands of Rhododendrons, the National flower of Nepal, blossom in red, pink, and white shades. This natural phenomenon creates an other-worldly atmosphere as a bonus during the trek, which is suitable for photography lovers.

In addition, Nepalis also celebrate a festive season associated with freshness and beauty in the spring. Trekkers get immersed in local festivities when they find themselves in India during festive seasons like Holi, The festival of colors celebrated in March. This celebration of life in which vibrant tones are brought to life and merrymaking shared by community members is the best chance to gain a cultural perspective on this country and its people. Likewise, people of the Nepali calendar celebrate the Nepali New Year in mid-April, which also paints the region as very colorful with many cultural programs and traditional dance and music performances.

Autumn Season (September to November)

Another favorable time to go for the Mardi Himal Trek is during the autumn season, which ranges from September to November. This season comes just after the monsoon, and as would be expected, the weather is a degree cooler with little or no precipitation.

The temperatures are higher than in spring, with good sunny weather most of the time, which is ideal for trekking at night, as temperatures can be pretty cold. During the autumn, colors are exceptionally vivid and clear, thus making visibility remarkable for the snowy peaks and the rest of the area.

Autumn is also a rich cultural celebration phase in Nepal. Another festival similar to the one described above is Dashain, which takes place around October and lasts thirteen days. It is considered the most important of all the festivals in Nepal.

People celebrate marriages and engagements with several programs like dances, feasts, and fasting through colorful events, making the cultural experience outstanding for the trekkers. The second famous festival of Nepal that follows Dashain is Tihar, also called the festival of lights, during which thousands of oil lamps and colored banners light up the nation.

Off Season Treks

While planning a trek to Mardi Himal during the off-season is rewarding in terms of the budget, it is also a very dangerous and risky proposition. This mainly occurs during the monsoon season between June and August, which makes hiking difficult due to torrents, landslides, and fickle weather, making the trails dangerous and the terrain unpredictable. The presence of mist and clouds also makes it difficult to view beautiful sceneries associated with the trek, making the venture less appealing to travelers.

However, more accidents are bound to happen, there are few options for accommodation and dining, and services are unpredictable, making off-season trekking even more difficult. Furthermore, loss of revenues has negative repercussions for the local people who depend on the profits generated from tourism activities.

Minimizing risks, avoiding encroachment on people’s space, and considering the consequences for nature should be the main guidelines for preparing a trek to Mardi Himal. This is because choosing to trek during the peak season has certain benefits, such as safety, clear visibility, and availability of services and facilities.

To practice sustainable tourism and adhere to the area's natural rhythms, Mardi Himal can be appreciated by travelers while benefiting the local community and providing them with a safer and more enriching experience.

Difficulty Level of the Mardi Himal Trek

The Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively moderate one. Still, it combines some adventures and lesser-known trails in Nepal, attracting hikers seeking an adventurous but less strenuous trek.

When traveling through thick and thorny bushes or steep terrains, each area reveals a new window and the opportunity to see the glorious Mardi Himal Base Camp. Trek difficulty is moderate regarding terrain and physical activity, with incessant climbing and descending coupled with the need to carry the day pack throughout the activity.

The trek is not particularly technical; however, a good attitude and readiness to confront the trip's difficulties are crucial assets. Embarked on this nine-day journey, within meters of setting foot, you are enveloped in the raw wilderness and mystery of the Himalayas.

Required Permits for Mardi Himal Trek

TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System)

The TIMS Permit, or Trekkers’ Information Management System Permit, is one of the most important documents a traveler must secure before visiting Nepal.

The TIMS permit for the Mardi Himal Trek is about NPR 2000 for the independent trekkers and NPR 1000 for the group trekkers.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP):

Mardi Himal Trek requires an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), which is NPR 3,000 for foreigners. For the SAARC nations, the fee is set at 1000 NPR, while Nepali citizens will have to pay 100 NPR.

Restricted Area Permit

Suppose you plan to trek in the regions covered in this Mardi Himal Trek, and the areas are categorized as restricted. In that case, you must apply for a Restricted Area Permit, especially if heading to the Upper Mardi Himal. This permit is expensive, and the price differs depending on various factors. It is even more costly than the usual trekking permits.

One must ensure that he or she acquires these permits before undertaking the Mardi Himal Trek to avoid being on the wrong side of the law and to aid in the preservation of the natural resources of the area.

Routes For The Mardi Himal Trek

Route 1: The Short and Direct Route

This route is preferable as it is shorter and more straightforward. First, you begin your journey in Pokhara. It takes about an hour’s drive from the car before you get to Kade, the trek's starting point. From Kade, you trek to Forest Camp. The next day, you head again to High Camp and then Mardi Base Camp. You return the same way you came.

One of the most common 5-day Mardi Himal treks follows this route, costing $500-$600.

Route 2: The Relaxed Route

This route is less strenuous, and the daily hikes are shorter than ihe previous route.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, you will hire a car to go to Phedi. After Phedi, one has to trek to Pothana, a beautiful Gurung village. From Pothana, there are trekking routes to Forest Camp, High Camp, and Mardi Base Camp. You return the same way.

This route usually takes about a week and ranges from $600 to $800. One of the examples of this itinerary is the 8-day Mardi Himal trek.

Every route has its benefits and beautiful scenery that you are likely to come across. While the shorter route is more challenging, it also costs less than the longer route. The longer route is a bit longer but will give you more time to sightsee and enjoy the view and the people, but it will cost you more. It will determine both the experience you make and the cost of your Mardi Himal trek.

  • Altitude Sickness | Need for Acclimatization

The Mardi Himal Trek is one of the most beautiful and least explored treks of the Annapurna region in Nepal for trekkers. However, one of the inconveniences of this trek is the likelihood of contracting altitude sickness, especially when the altitude is above 2500 meters. The trek's highest point is the Mardi Himal base camp, at an altitude of 4500m, where the atmosphere becomes even thinner.

AMS, also called altitude sickness, is a condition that a trekker may experience at high altitudes with a low oxygen supply. These are Headache, nausea, dizziness, tiredness, and, in the worst-case scenarios, can lead to HAPE or HACE, which are deadly if not treated. This is important since it helps the trekkers acclimatize to the conditions on the trekking route and minimizes conditions such as altitude sickness. It involves allowing the body to adapt to the conditions of low oxygen prevailing in the highlands. This usually includes using the gradual climb technique, spending time at certain altitudes, and incorporating daily rest days.

Acclimatization decreases the chances of AMS because it prepares the body gradually for new conditions. Trekkers should also drink plenty of water and not alcohol during the trek and listen to their bodies; if any symptoms are felt, one should descend if necessary. It is wise to add the acclimatization days to the schedule to avoid serious health issues, enjoy the incredible views, and taste the Himalayas’ culture. First of all, realizing the importance of acclimatization, the trekkers will be able to reduce the risk of getting altitude sickness and will have a great time on the Mardi Himal Trek.

Guided Trek vs Non-Guided Trek

Although the idea of a solo trek is a little tempting, a guided tour is much more advantageous than traveling on one’s own, in particular after the newly established rule adopted by the Nepal Tourism Board stating that independent trekking is allowed only with the presence of a guide starting from April 1, 2023.

Guides provide great value for their familiarity with the area, and they can ensure that the trekkers do not miss the cultural means, dances, music, and other beautiful remote places. It provides security; they are well-skilled in handling difficult routes and unfavorable weather situations. Their skills can help avoid typical misadventures and respond to calamities immediately without causing much trouble for trek lovers.

Besides, guides work to close the language barriers so that tourists may interact with the locals normally and make the trekking experience as interesting as possible.

Choosing a guided trek also helps the local population so people find work, and tourism also remains rational. Local guides also help by providing information on the area's traditions, plants, and animals; therefore, the march becomes an informative experience.

Do I Need Porters?

While you still can do the Mardi Himal Trek without porters, we highly recommend you add them to your team. Since your itinerary will be 9 days long, having porters with you will be highly advantageous.

The Mardi Himal Trek is a very exciting trek to Mardi Himal, but it is relatively challenging at the same time since our itinerary is 9 days long. But there's room for you to make it light by hiring porters so that travelers can get the best experience. It relieves the strenuous load bearing from backpacks so that trekkers can have a clear view of the gorgeous terrains to cover.

Porters also add to the security in that they are always ready to assist and familiar with the route and areas that should be avoided. They not only take some of the pressure off of you but also add the depth of the cultural experience and the camaraderie of a shared experience.
