The Tamang Heritage Trail is an off-beat path opened not long ago in Nepal's Langtang region. The trail offers scenic views of surrounding mountains, monasteries, rich biodiversity, and centuries-old traditions of the native Tamang community along the route.

The Tamang are an ethnic group who migrated from Tibet settling in the southern plains of Langtang and Rolwaling valleys. They are primarily farmers and traders who have preserved their unique cultural traditions through generations.

This 12-day trek winds through settlements of the native Tamang people. Trekkers can closely observe their centuries-old way of life and traditional homes. The journey is further enriched by forests teeming with rhododendrons in the spring and stunning views of snow-capped Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Kerung, and Sanjen Himal. Additionally, trekkers may encounter endangered species such as the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, and Musk Deer.

The trek begins in Syabrubesi after a bus ride from Kathmandu and continues with a hike to Gatlang, a Tamang settlement where you can explore local chortens, monasteries, and the sacred Parbati Kunda Lake. From Gatlang, you head to Tatopani, which means 'hot water' in Nepali, where you’ll find natural hot springs. Locals believe these hot springs have healing properties.

Our next stop is Thuram, renowned for its picturesque meadows and stunning mountain views. From Thuram, you can hike to Briddim via the ancient trade route to Tibet. Briddim is another small Tamang village where you can explore Dukchu Gompa. After a 6-hour hike from Briddim, we can reach Lama hotel. The trail passes through lush jungles, offering visitors a chance to encounter red pandas up close.

After an overnight stay at the Lama Hotel, we'll depart for Langtang Village at dawn. Upon reaching Ghode Tabela, we'll have our permits checked and then continue our hike through Chyamki Village before finally arriving at Langtang Village.

From Langtang Village, we ascend to Kyanjin Gompa, traversing picturesque meadows, high-altitude plateaus, and small settlements. Once in Kyanjin Gompa, we can explore local cheese factories, ancient monasteries, or take an optional hike to Tserko Ri, the highest point on the trail, offering breathtaking panoramic views of of mountains like Langtang Lirung (7,234 m), Shishapangma (8,027 m), and Langtang Ri (7,205 m).

Trip PlanExpand all

Your Tamang Heritage Trek begins in Kathmandu. You'll catch a bus from Machha Pokhari to Syabrubesi. Along the way, you'll see lush green landscapes, beautiful villages, terraced farms, snow-capped mountains, and rivers. As you climb towards Dunche, you'll get a view of Manaslu, Annapurna, Ganesh Himal, and other smaller peaks. After a 7-8 hour bus ride, you'll arrive in Syabrubesi. Once you get there, you can freshen up and explore the town before dinner. Syabrubesi is 80 kilometers north of Kathmandu, nestled in the hills on the way to Langtang. It's also known as the gateway to the Langtang Valley.

You will start our trek after an early breakfast. After about 3 hours, you will reach Ronja Bhanjyang. From there, you can enjoy amazing views of the Gosaikunda Range and Ganesh Himal as we descend into the Goljung Valley. After a lunch break in Goljung, we'll continue our hike for another 3 hours, arriving at our final destination for the day: Gatlang. This beautiful Tamang settlement is home to an ancient monastery, chortens and Parbati Kunda. Visitors can experience rich Tamang hospitality and witness the ancient Tamang culture and traditions in Gatlang.

On the third day of your trek, you'll head towards Tatopani from Gatlang. You'll follow a stone-paved trail, passing chortens and mani walls, and descend to Chilime (1760m). After crossing a suspension bridge, you will hike uphill for about an hour and a half to reach Gongang village. You'll take a short break in Gongang for lunch and then continue your trek, gradually climbing to Tatopani. Once you reach Tatopani, you can soak in the natural hot springs. Locals believe these springs have healing properties that can cure aches and pains.

Early morning, you’ll leave for Thuman. Traversing through rhododendron and oak forests, you’ll enjoy spectacular views as you reach Brimdang. After a two-hour ascent, you’ll arrive at Nagthali Danda. You can enjoy your lunch in Nagthali with breathtaking views of Langtang Lirung (7,234m), Ganesh Himal (7,422m), Shishapangma (8,027m), and other smaller peaks. After that, you’ll hike to your final destination for the day, Thuman, a small Tamang hamlet with teahouses and deep-rooted Tibetan culture.

Our destination for today is Briddim, which lies on the other side of the Bhote Koshi River. On the way to Briddim, along the ancient trade route to Tibet, you'll stop at Timure for lunch. Just a three-hour walk away is the famous old fort on the Nepal-Tibet border, called Rasuwagadhi. From Timure, the trail takes a steep ascent to Briddim, our stop for the day. You'll stay at a traditional teahouse.

From Briddhim, you’ll trek for about six hours to reach Lama Hotel. Along the trail, you’ll pass through bamboo forests and terraced fields, with a chance to spot rare species like red pandas. The route gradually ascends to Rimche before reaching Lama Hotel, located on the banks of the Langtang River

From Lama Hotel, you'll trek along the river valley, enjoying lush landscapes and stunning views of snow-capped mountains. The climb to Ghoda Tabela (3,030m) is relatively easy. At Ghoda Tabela, you'll have your permits checked at an army checkpoint. After that, you'll continue your trek uphill, passing through Chyamki Village (3,230m) and encountering prayer wheels, chortens, and mani walls before finally reaching Langtang Village.

After breakfast, you'll embark on a short trek from Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa. You'll pass through small settlements, mani walls, and green pastures, reaching Mundu Village. Crossing a cement bridge over a stream and climbing a moraine, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of Kyanjin Gompa and the icefall cascading from the surrounding mountains. After a final ridge climb, the trail descends to Kyanjin Gompa.

Today, you'll have a full day to explore the beauty of Kyanjin Gompa and acclimatize. Kyanjin Gompa offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

You can visit the Nyingmapa Monastery School. There's also a Kyanjin cheese factory, established with Swiss help in the 1950s, where you can observe the cheese-making process. Next to the cheese factory is the century-old Kyanjin Gompa, where you can see monks offering prayers and feed the people living in the monastery.

You can opt for a hike to Tserko Ri (5,450m) for spectacular views of Langtang Lirung (7,244m) and Langshisa Ri (6,810m). Alternatively, you can choose to visit “7 lakes”, which is a better option for those who don't want to climb Tserko Ri.

After our wonderful stay in Kyanjin Gompa, it's time to head back to Lama Hotel. We'll retrace our steps back to Lama Hotel, passing through Langtang Village and Ghoda Tabela. At Ghoda Tabela, we'll have our permits checked at the army checkpoint and enjoy lunch. After lunch, we'll descend through the dense river valley forests to Lama Hotel.

Today is the final trek of your 12 day tamang heritage trail trek down to Syabrubesi. While you descend down along the Langtang river, spectacular mountain views greets you. After walking down through dense bamboo forest and crossing the Langtang river you will reach Syabrubesi the starting point of your trek.

After a final hearty breakfast in Syabrubesi, we’ll board a bus for the 7-8 hour journey back to Kathmandu. As we head south, you can enjoy views of the Trishuli River, pasture meadows, terraced farmlands, and snow-capped mountains along the way.

Essential Information

Best time for Tamang Heritage Trail

Weather plays a crucial role in planning your Langtang Valley trek. While trekking is possible year-round, the best seasons are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November).

During these seasons, the weather is clear, temperatures are pleasant, and the trails are relatively dry. This provides optimal conditions for enjoying stunning mountain views and a comfortable trekking experience.

Winter brings snow to the higher altitudes, making the trails challenging. Monsoon season, on the other hand, can lead to slippery trails and limited visibility of the mountains.

Tamang Heritage Trail in Spring: This is the best time to explore the region. The mid-March to May period offers the perfect weather conditions as temperature is pleasantly warm, ensuring comfortable trekking days. Clear skies provide breathtaking views of snow-capped Langtang Lirung, Langtang II, Ganesh Himal and many more.

Tamang Heritage Trail in Autumn:This is another fantastic time to explore the Langtang Valley. The monsoon has just ended, leaving the air crisp and clear. You'll enjoy stunning, rain-washed mountain views. Daytime temperatures reach a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius, while night time temperatures drop to around 5 degrees Celsius. As November begins, you might even see some snow, a sign that winter is approaching.
